Gaye Abandon makes the cutest & cleverest winter accessories - all from upcycled, felted jumpers. (No wonder they're warm!) We're long-time fans of the Gaye Abandon label - you might remember our "wallets & winteries" post from way back in May 2007... Designer Gaye Naismith is originally from New Zealand, and now calls Melbourne home. She loves thrift shopping and collecting vintage fabrics and patterns, old postcards and jumpers to transform into her handmade creations. The Necklace Scarves pictured above look like a string of woollen autumn leaves & they're available in just as many colours.

The original Tubeway Armies are a signature style of the Body Parts range. Along with the Scarves and Midriff Warmers, the Body Parts woollen accessories are made in partnership with Gaye's stitching buddy Melanie Hill (of Textile Allsorts). I love the stitching & vintage button details which make each pair unique!

The Midriff Warmers can only be described as brilliant... how did we ever live without them? In Japan, the haramaki (belly warmer) is a common item of clothing. It is traditionally worn next to the skin as an under layer, but the Body Parts pretties are designed to be worn as part of a layered look, peeping out from under your jumper or shirt.

I particularly like the geometric design pictured above. Not only does this four panel design swivel, allowing you to choose which panel faces the front, but the two patterned panels are cut with the finishing edge of the jumper at the top to form a fitted waist.

More brilliance! These "hot under the collar" hottie covers are little jumpers for your hot water bottle. They feature the cuttest button up neck with collar which turns up to cover the rubber neck when the hottie is in use. (Of course, the hottie jumper can be unbuttoned for easy removal and is fully washable.)

Bamboo Dress by Kisu

New dress! New dress! As I type, I'm wearing the prettiest new addition to my wardrobe - the Moon Flower Dress by Sydney label Kisu. I'm over the moon about this new find, first spied through the window of Kisu's Newtown boutique a couple of weeks ago. I chose the black/grey patterned option pictured in the style below left (in the red/orange colour combo). It's hard to see the pattern in the photo, but it features same delicate geometric design as the Jasmine Dress on the right.

It's always a challenge for me to find a dress that fits well. The extra curves don't really suit the strappy dresses or crossover tops which have been everywhere the last few years. Not only does the Moon Flower style have a gorgeous neckline and fitted & flattering A-line cut, it is also made from cotton with a little stretch, so it really sits beautifully - and not just in the tiny size being modelled in the pic! The detailing around the waist is so cute too...

Butterfly Shorts and Summer Grove Top by Kisu

Kisu is the creation of Sydney fashion designer Mylinh. The doors opened to the Newtown store a couple of years ago - any Sydney indies from the Newtown area will recognise the cute & enormous head of the Japanese mannequin as well as other characters who have appeared in Mylinh's colourful window displays. It's always hard to resist popping in to admire her designs (and shoes!) which are totally different from anything else in the area.

Spearflower Stitch Dress and Lotus Dress by Kisu

I'm sure many of you are familiar with the friendly face of Aunty Cookie (as seen on her blog, www.auntycookie.com). Aunty Cookie is in fact Melbourne designer Shannon Lamden, who specialises in fabric design and illustration. Her product range includes hand-printed fabrics, bags, softies, original drawings, one of a kind fabric bunting and limited edition fabric craft panels.

The versatile fabric Craft Panels measure 75cm x 75cm and feature various character poses and squares of patterns - perfect for quilting, appliques and a multitude of crafty projects just waiting to leap out of your imagination. The fabric is a 200gsm cotton drill and has been hand screen printed using environmentally friendly inks. I love Shannon's distinctive drawing style & the expression on her characters' faces. The simplified lines work so well with the patterned areas (which are also picked up in the funky outfits worn by the cookie people).

Originally available in black on white or cherry on white, the Craft Panels are also now available in a blue colourway. Each panel is US $28, and as Shannon says, "This Crafters Panel is limited edition so what are you waiting for?".

If you're looking to make a larger piece, there are another two eye-catching prints currently available for purchase by the metre. (These are sold per 50cm/20" length for US $15. Fabric measures approx. 750mm wide, with the printed area measuring 700mm wide.) Pictured above is "Trinkets" which is available in fire engine red on white or light grey on white. "Butterflies" is pictured below, and is available in black on white or light grey on white. I love the subtlety of the grey prints, but I also love the contrast in the black & red... I just can't decide which is my favourite! Once again, these prints are limited edition & really something special.
